Gifts By Bequest

When you decide to include the WRL in your will, you make a lasting gift. Your legacy will help ensure the WRL can continue our work to end war and the causes of war.
A gift by will or bequest, made through our fiscal sponsor, the AJ Muste Memorial Institute, is totally deductible for estate tax purposes.
Here are different ways to support the WRL through a charitable bequest, along with commonly used language:

• A specific bequest of a stated dollar amount or specific securities;
"I give to the War Resisters League, located at 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012), the sum of ____ dollars (or describe the specific property or security you intend to give)."

• A residual bequest grants the residue, or portion of the residue, of your estate to the WRL after explicit bequests have been made;
"I give to the War Resisters League, located at 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012), all (or ____ %) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal property of whatever kind and wheresoever situated."

• A contingent bequest in case one or more of your bequests cannot be fulfilled;

"If any of the above-named beneficiaries should predecease me, I hereby give his/her share of my estate to the War Resisters League located at 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012)."

You should always consult your attorney when drawing up or revising your will to ensure your intentions are carried out properly.
Contributions to WRL are not tax-deductible. If tax deductibility is a concern, donations should be made through our fiscal sponsor, the AJ Memorial Institute,which is a nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In the case of wanting your gift, in your will, to be tax deductible it should say

“I give to the AJ Muste Institute, located at 339 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10012, for the benefit of the WRL’s educational work….”

If you have any questions or need additional information, please call us at (212)228-0450 or contact us online. We recommend that you consult with your attorney or tax advisor for the various tax benefits and restrictions that may apply to your specific situation. We are available to you and your advisors to answer questions or help arrange a planned gift to the WRL. The WRL’s future programs depends on the partnerships we form today.
